Celebrating Black History Month
At Alma Laser, we celebrate diversity. We aim to create products and treatments that facilitate the wellbeing of all types of people and all different skin types. October is Black History Month in the UK – a time for people from all different backgrounds to come together to recognize the importance of Black history and culture.
Four Doctors Who Are Shaping the Future
When it comes to cosmetic treatments such as laser hair removal, scar removal, tattoo removal, skin resurfacing and more, it’s important to understand how different types of skin respond. In particular, many people with higher Fitzpatrick skin types (5-6) have difficulty accessing laser treatments because practitioners don’t always have the technology or the technique to confidently treat darker skin.
Skincare should be easily accessible to people regardless of their skin colour. Historically, some clinicians have essentially ignored a sector of the population just because some of their skincare needs are different. This needs to change. The following influential doctors are using their skills to transform the world of skincare and improve patient experience for people of colour!
Dr. Tijion Esho
Dr. Tijion Esho is the owner of two cosmetic clinics, is the resident doctor on BBC Morning Live, and has even formulated his own skincare line. Through his many projects, Dr. Esho fights for better legislation, improved diversity, and a better patient experience for people of color.
In his practice, Dr. Esho uses laser treatments for skin rejuvenation. When he first started integrating laser into his practice, Dr. Esho noticed that most companies were unwilling to demo lasers on his dark skin, often requesting to use a white model to showcase the treatment instead. But when he met with Alma Laser, he was impressed to find a company that would confidently demo the product on his skin. Now, he formulates bespoke treatment plans to accomplish his patients’ goals using Alma Laser technology.
Prof. Dr. Pretidev Ramdawon
As a highly experienced physician, surgeon and scientist, Prof. Dr. Pretidev Ramdawon, M.D., Ph.D., Ph.D., D.M.Sc. is an influential leader in the industry. Among many other accomplishments, Dr. Ramdawon is the CEO and Chief Medical Consultant of the VIP Laser Clinic Med Spa, a health and beauty care wellness centre offering medical & surgical aesthetic services to people of all skin colours.
Dr. Ramdawon’s clinic specializes in providing top-notch laser technologies. Dr. Ramdawon has demonstrated success on skin types 5 and 6 using a combination treatment with the Alma Pixel CO2 laser and Carbon ClearLift laser treatment. Through his methods, he has been successful in healing and improving the appearance of acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmented spots, tightening, depigmentation and more.
Prof. Dr. Moshe Lapidoth
Prof. Moshe Lapidoth, MD MPH is an attending physician at the Rabin Medical Centre in Israel, where he is the Director of the Laser Unit. Today, Dr. Lapidoth focuses on laser and other energy-based therapies in the treatment of both medical and cosmetic procedures with a strong focus on being inclusive of a variety of skin types, providing skillful care to the Ethiopian population in Israel.
In a study published by the JAAD, Dr. Lapidoth was able to achieve incredible results with carbon-based tattoo removal on over 400 people with skin types 5 and 6. By using Q-switched lasers, he achieved clearance of 75-100% of tattoo ink in 92%of the patients and 50-75% in the remaining 8%. When other clinics did not want to risk laser tattoo removal for Ethiopian immigrants, Dr. Lapidoth and his team welcomed them and even assisted many people pro bono.
Dr. Paula Cordeiro
Last but certainly not least, we have Dr. Paula Cordiero, dermatologist, Member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatological Surgery (SBCD). Dr. Cordiero is an incredible physician who focuses her skillful care on a variety of skin types, specializing particularly in cases of post-inflammatory hyperchromia, post-acne or scarring.
Dr. Cordiero uses ClearLift from Alma Laser in her clinic and frequently treats patients with Fitzpatrick skin types 5 and 6. Her preferred treatment is to use the ClearLift at 1400 2Hz parameters to improve pores and texture with an interval between sessions of 15/15 days. For post-inflammatory hyperchromia, she uses the ClearLift in parameters of 1200 4hz stacked 5x with an interval between sessions of 15/15 days.
